Glutathione is a natural antioxidant that is found in the body and in some foods. It has many benefits for the skin, such as protecting it from oxidative stress, supporting detoxification, and improving the appearance of discolorations. it can make the skin brighter by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color.

Oxidized L-Glutathione, also known as GSSG or glutathiol, is a form of glutathione that has lost two electrons and gained a disulfide bond between two cysteine residues. Oxidized L-Glutathione is an indicator of oxidative stress, which occurs when the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) exceeds the capacity of the antioxidant system.

There are several analytical methods for measuring the concentration of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) in human plasma, such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), electrochemical detection, and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). These methods typically require sample preparation steps, such as deproteinization, derivatization, or masking of reduced glutathione (GSH), to avoid interference and increase sensitivity. One of the most rapid and convenient methods is based on the masking of GSH with p-benzoquinone (BQ), followed by enzymatic kinetic measurement of GSSG using glutathione reductase.
