Acetyl glutathione (SAG) is a naturally occurring compound that is a precursor to glutathione (GSH). Glutathione is one of the most important antioxidants in cells. It plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative stress, maintaining cell function, and helping detoxification. SAG works by converting to GSH in cells, thereby participating in many important processes of cells.
According to the latest research, SAG can not only increase GSH levels in cells, but also show a protective effect against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver damage. This means that SAG may help to reduce liver damage caused by oxidative stress and regulate the inflammatory response associated with it.
So, is SAG better than GSH? Studies have shown that SAG is more stable in plasma, can be directly absorbed by cells, and converted to GSH in cells. This makes SAG more effective in increasing intracellular GSH levels than direct supplementation of GSH. Since GSH is metabolized in the intestine, oral GSH may not successfully increase GSH levels in plasma. Therefore, as a precursor of GSH, SAG provides a potentially more effective way to supplement.
When we consider supplementing antioxidants, the form is an important consideration. SAG is considered an effective form of GSH supplementation due to its stability and high bioavailability. Clinical studies have shown that oral administration of SAG can significantly increase GSH levels in plasma and red blood cells. This shows that SAG is not only able to enter the blood circulation, but also can be absorbed by red blood cells, which is good news for people who need to increase GSH levels to resist oxidative stress.
There is no clear consensus on the daily requirement of SAG. This is because the requirement may vary from person to person, depending on the individual's health status, lifestyle and treatment goals. In scientific studies, the dose used was 30 mg/kg, administered orally for 8 weeks. However, this is a dose used under specific experimental conditions and is not suitable as a general recommendation.
With the deepening of scientific research, the value of SAG as a health supplement is being recognized by more and more people. Its potential to protect the liver and boost antioxidant levels makes it a promising health-preserving option.
