What is glutathione?

Reduced glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide composed of cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid. Its molecular structure contains two active groups, γ-glutamyl and -SH, which exist widely in organisms and have many important physiological functions.

Through a reasonable delivery carrier design, embedding CUR and glutathione into a nanoparticle at the same time, and achieving sufficient loading capacity, may be a feasible idea to improve the stability and synergy of both.

Glutathione and NAC

Let’s start with an important but perhaps unfamiliar nutrient called glutathione.

This is a nutrient that can help detoxify the body and is important for maintaining the function of the liver.

However, GSH is difficult to get directly into cells, so the journal does not recommend taking it as a separate supplement (although there is no danger in doing so).

GSH requires a high-quality B complex vitamin and three essential amino acids.

Examples include vitamins B2, niacin (vitamin B3), B6 and B12, L-glycine (protects the prostate and builds muscle strength), L-glutamine (maintains the digestive and immune systems), and L-cysteine (detoxifies and protects the liver).

Of the three amino acids, L-cysteine is the most important, and NAC is a stable derivative of cysteine.

NAC undergoes a number of chemical reactions in the body that help the body produce glutathione.

Pomegranate extract coordinates glutathione in the body

GSH plays an important role in maintaining the normal function of the immune system and antioxidants.

It is present in the human body in two forms, one is reduced glutathione (G-SH) and the other is oxidized glutathione (G-S-S-G), in which GSH dominates in quantity.

In order to study its changes in elderly animals, 10μL blood samples were used and N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) derivatization was treated. The concentrations of GSH and GSSG (oxidized glutathione) in blood were determined by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

The results of the study showed that GSH levels in the older mice decreased slightly.

A slower rate of GSH increase was observed in older animals treated with pomegranate extract.

The concentration of GSSG in the blood of the older animals increased, and this phenomenon was improved after ingestion of pomegranate extract.

The ratio of reduced to oxidized glutathione is considered to be an important indicator of blood REDOX status. Studies have shown that the REDOX ratio of GSH decreases significantly with age, and the intake of pomegranate extract helps to improve this situation.

Pomegranate extract reversed the increase in malondialdehyde caused by cerebellar aging and increased the GSH/GSSG ratio in the blood.

Foods rich in glutathione

Glutathione is an important antioxidant that helps scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress.

Studies have shown that GSH can also slow down the occurrence of glycation, which has a certain role in preventing diseases such as diabetes.

Legumes, nuts, chicken and other foods are rich in GSH, and you can increase the glutathione content in the body through dietary intake, which helps to resist glycation.

Food plays an important role in the process of glycosylation in our body, and some foods can help to resist glycosylation, slow down the rate of glycosylation, and protect the health of various tissues in the body.
