Glutathione (GSH) is a natural antioxidant that effectively helps remove free radicals from the body and inhibits melanin formation.

Glutathione inhibits melanin in three ways:

  • (1) tyrosinase activity is directly inhibited by sulfhydryl chelation with tyrosinase (a key enzyme in the synthesis of melanin).
  • (2) Glutathione interferes with the cellular transfer of tyrosinase to melanin precursors, which is a prerequisite for melanin synthesis.
  • (3) tyrosinase inhibition is indirectly achieved through its antioxidant effect.

Glutathione inhibits melanin production through the reaction between sulfhydryl and dopa quinone (an intermediate product of melanin synthesis) to form a mercaptodopa chelate.

Glutathione whitening mechanism

For oral use:

A randomized, double-blind, two-group, placebo-controlled study in a Thai population examined the effect of oral glutathione on skin melanin index in 60 healthy medical students.

Participants were randomly assigned to receive glutathione capsules at a dose of 500 mg/day in two doses, or placebo, for four weeks.

The primary endpoint of the study was a reduction in the melanin index at six different sites.

At four weeks, the melanin index in the glutathione group continued to decline at all six sites.

For local external application (washing) :

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in 30 healthy Filipino women aged 30-50 years provided some evidence to support the efficacy of topical use of 2% GSSG (oxidized glutathione) lotions for temporary skin whitening.

Patients were randomly given glutathione as a 2% GSSG lotion or a placebo lotion twice daily for ten weeks.

GSSG is superior to reduced glutathione because reduced glutathione is unstable in aqueous solution.

GSSG is absorbed through the skin to produce glutathione. Objective evaluation of cuticle, skin smoothness, skin elasticity and wrinkle formation.

There was a statistically significant increase. Compared with placebo, glutathione had a statistically significant reduction in melanin index.

For intravenous administration:

Due to the low bioavailability of oral glutathione, intravenous glutathione is being promoted to provide the desired therapeutic level in the blood and skin and produce “instant” skin lightening.

Interestingly, intravenous glutathione has been used for years, but not even a single clinical trial has evaluated its efficacy.

Manufacturers of intravenous glutathione recommend a dose of 600-1200 mg for skin whitening, given once or twice a week.

Intravenous administration is expected to achieve 100% bioavailability of glutathione, which is much higher than oral administration.

No research supports this hypothesis. Although intravenous glutathione provides a higher therapeutic dose and enhances its efficacy, it should not be tried due to the potential for excessive toxicity.

In SUMMARY:

Glutathione can whiten! But try to use both oral and topical. Oral glutathione to find regular nutritional supplements according to the effective dose of eating.

For external use, look for regular products containing oxidized glutathione at concentrations greater than 2%.
